Famciclovir (Famvir) is an antiviral medicine that is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, including genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles. Antivirals work by making viruses less active in your body. Sometimes famciclovir is also used in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who develop herpes outbreaks around the mouth, genitals, or anal area. Famciclovir is not a cure for herpes. It just makes it harder for the virus to grow and spread. While you are having sex, there is always a risk of passing herpes to your partner. Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor. There are some common side effects such as diarrhea, Cramps, headache, nausea, stomach pain, heavy bleeding. You should not use famciclovir if you are allergic to famciclovir or penciclovir cream (Denavir). Avoid sexual intercourse or use a condom to help keep you from spreading the virus to others.
